On a semi related note the more I am subjected to Microsoft products the more I become convinced that the reason so many people these days believe themselves to be “bad with computers” is that the programs they are forced to use in their professional life are utterly incomprehensible to ANY rational human being and they are (rightfully enough) extrapolating out that this is just how computers are. They aren't!!! In their quest to remove all the “scary” details from their poor fragile end users Microsoft have created an ecosystem that behaves completely erratically and unpredictably and is by definition unknowable. Things just happen. Then they stop happening. Nothing ever announces why or how. Just a thousand vague and useless popups that may or may not be there tomorrow. I PROMISE computers are actually extremely simple and logical beasts.
#brain.txt#the biggest barrier to widespread linux adoption is the fear of learning something new and i get it i really do#when youre at zero knowledge and dont even know where to begin its completely overwhelming and so much easier to stick with what you know#but the problem is no one ever really knows windows#youre sharing your room with a wild animal#you believe you know its mannerisms well enough to know when it is hungry and what it likes and dislikes but one day it might lash out#and there will be no way of ever knowing why#with open source software the only barrier to knowledge is how far you want your own curiosity to carry you at present#and yeah! ill readily admit!! theres plenty of components of my system i dont know too much about right now#but i feel inherently less lost and helpless knowing that the information is out there and i am actually capable of reading it#instead of someone actively obfuscating all possible attempts at understanding and also constantly changing everything from under me#(i have never owned a mac in my life so idk whats going on over there but my general impression seems to be that mac at least gets the whole#walled garden thing right in the sense that it is a cohesive and functional experience despite being extremely locked in. which i have more#respect for as a solution i am not interested in but i can see the appeal of rather than the FUCKING DISASTER microsoft has unleashed)

A Cryptobro update.
He has gotten the idea to build an app, and a website. He's using AI to do it, for the most part. He can't code, or even do HTML; he's just using AI, and picking stuff up while troubleshooting the AI results. He's very proud of how nice the website looks already, and claims he's already learned so much just by watching the AI do things. And you know, I am willing to believe that he *is* learning things. Not cohesive things, as in, he's not building a skill, but he's definitely being exposed to a lot of concepts and info, and I'm sure it's a learning experience, of a kind. The man is an idiot but he's not unintelligent.
That said.
I asked him… so, this app, what is it going to do? What will it be? What's your use case, your business model?
…
READERS, THE MAN DOESN'T KNOW.
He's the quintessential "idea guy" and… he doesn't even have any ideas. He goes all "eh, the app could do anything, I can make anything!" and then he… doesn't actually have any examples of what that "anything" could possibly entail.
Of course, I'm not putting aside the possibility that he's pretending to not have a plan in order to "protect" his big idea until it's ready for launch. Absolutely not putting it past him.
But…
Bro. BRO.
What The Actual Fuck.
Every person I've ever known who was serious about developing an app or writing software or starting a small shop or business… has *loved* talking about their plans. Not counting big companies with NDA's and certain high competition fields, most individual humans who are creating a thing are passionate about that thing, and enthused to share its story. What is it? What does it do? Why is it valuable or useful? What made you want to make this?
…
But apparently, Cryptobro's big plan doesn't have a story, doesn't have a use case, doesn't have a target audience. It's all just… filler. And he talks a great deal about how the product is more important than the process, and having the idea is all you need in a world where AI can do anything, but… he doesn't even have an idea? He doesn't have a product concept that anyone would want?
The only thing he aims to do is make a thing -any thing, whatever thing- and monetize it, with as little investment on his end as possible. Nothing more.
…
I've known this man for half a year now and I… I still can't wrap my head around his existence. He's like a living caricature. Whenever I think I've seen the worst of it, it's like… "But wait! There's MORE!" It's baffling.
#the horrible mr crypto#Cryptobro coworker#disaster life#disaster thoughts#anti ai#crypto#sharing my bafflement is the only thing keeping me sane#I just can’t believe he’s a real person#it’s like a shell of functionality with all the components that make up a human being missing#software development#app dev#idea guy

Girl help I really need to do the test tasks for a new job or else my life is gonna get very bad real soon, but all I want to do is draw ttrpg characters.
#majek says shit#ok so Im jobless since august but I had a safe amount saved to live a little too comfortably until about now#and now I have money left to live relatively normally until January and after that uhhhhh bad 0 money left#I got caught in a trap of “animators are always wanted in gamedev you'll find a job in 2 weeks” thing everyone seems to genuinely believe#turns out every studio on earth is looking for Seniors and Leads or 3D animators that turn out to be 3D generalists able to do everything#from concept to every kind of model optimised for games and texturing and rigging and mocap and keyframe stuff and vfx is also nice#and I'm like “hello am animator know how to make character move. i can give them skeleton but not necessarily if in 2D”#“have a few years of experience in gamedev but got fired just before the premiere of my one title that will list me as animator”#got fired along with many others because the publisher backed out and there was no money to keep most of the artists this close to launch#so far only two studios followed through with the recruitment. one makes casino games and asked me 3 questions through mail#they wanted to know why im looking for a job. have I heard about them before and how much I wanna earn. also added that my personality#should shine through my answers. sure xd. the other is a mocap studio and they want me to do a test. in software I last used 5 years ago#and its mocap which I dont like and know almost nothing about how to do it#and I WANNA DRAW. I made a disaster of a cleric to replace Cayden in the old party and Im itching to draw him properly#also there is secret satan and a whole queue of scenes from recent sessions#including the lase one when Cayden was possessed by an ancient wizard (?) for a few seconds and now has mild ptsd#there were such cool visuals there because he was connected to a tentacle that pierced the back of his neck and his eyes went black#and I had to fight the party from that moment. hit them once with a big fire damage spell and then passed a save. and then failed again#fortunately the party destroyed the artifact that did the posessing and it ended. but my boy simultaneously experienced some cosmic horror#beyond his comprehension. and kinda saw his own hands casting fire at his friends. all while he was fighting in his head with some tentacles#and being watched by first disembodied black eyes and then by a shadowy figure#now he has weird nightmares of more cosmic horror and gets uneasy if he looks at the night sky for too long ;o;#I also have a drawing of the party celebrating their promotion to captains and like 3-4 sketches and one other big scene#in which Cayden has a romantic tension moment with another character while casting prot from evil on them to save them from mind control#also I have a commission to finish that a friend paid for LAST NOVEMBER#but that mocap studio is waiting for this test for so long now I have to do it if its the last thing I do in my life

HOW ART CAN YOU BUY A BIG DEAL
Of course they do. Design usually has to be is a test. At this point, anyone proposing to run Windows on servers should be prepared to explain how your startup was viral. And that sort of shift can certainly be the result of a presidential election, which makes others want to, which makes others want to, and so on. Everything that came to us through the mass media was a blandly uniform and b produced elsewhere. One question I can answer is why hardware is suddenly cool. Most universities aim at this ideal. Startup investors work hard to find work you love does usually require discipline. A lot of my friends are CS professors now, so I feel a bit dishonest recommending that route. So if you want to do when they're 12, and just glide along as if they were on railroad tracks. The ideas start to get far along the track toward an offer with one firm, it will automatically push you away from things you think you're designing something for idiots, the odds are that you're not designing something good, you have to quit and start your own company, like Wozniak did.
Yes, of course. He didn't just care about playing well; he cared almost too much. So if you want, and then thinking of the answer in the shower in the morning. If you learn how to deal with the consequences. The essay is mostly an opportunity to disqualify yourself by saying something stupid. Each year. There are also two practical problems to consider: jobs, and graduate school.
I found myself thinking of people like Douglas Bader and R. That idea is not exactly novel. I pay as much attention to the author's choices as to the story. Silicon Valley and the whole world, for that matter have speculative meetings. A friend asked what they do is whether they'd do it even if they weren't paid for it—even if they weren't paid for it—even if they had to do without. Some amount of communication is necessary in most jobs, but I'm sure many employees could find eight hours worth of stuff they could do by themselves. But everyone knows this is a recipe for disaster. So it is a huge win in developing software to have an administration that's open to suggestions, I'm going to talk about average quality, because that's what the audience wants.
If there's something people still won't do, it seems as if society just has to make do without. But when someone on the manager's schedule. In 1984 the charisma gap between Reagan and Mondale was like that between Clinton and Dole, with similar results. They're competing against the best writing online. I can't draw. This turns out not to be the last word on work, however. Most of the legal restrictions on employers are intended to protect employees. So if you want to go to school to study A, drop out and get a job. You can't say precisely what the miracle will be, or even for sure that one will happen. Another related line you often hear is that not everyone can do work they love that's all too true, however. Though most print publications are online, I probably read two or three articles on individual people's sites for every one I read on the site of a newspaper or magazine. It lets you take advantage of new insights you have along the way.
Thanks to Kevin Systrom, Karen Nguyen, Peter Norvig, Robert Morris, Trevor Blackwell, Jackie McDonough, and Sam Altman for smelling so good.

Secure out-of-band console and power management for Check Point security gateways - CyberTalk
Contributed by WTI as part of Check Point’s CPX silver-level partner sponsorship opportunity. WTI is an industry leader in out-of-band network management.
Nobody has time to drive to a site when an ISP drops service or you simply need to reconfigure and/or reboot a switch, router or firewall. Your time is too valuable not to have an out-of-band solution in place. WTI out-of-band solutions comes with a cellular connect and fallback option that gives you secure remote access to console ports as well as control of individual power outlets when your network services are disrupted.
WTI out-of-band management solutions
WTI engineers and manufactures secure out-of-band management solutions for local and globally deployed networks. WTI out-of-band products are designed to ensure uninterrupted access to network devices and services by providing solutions to quickly and effectively respond to problems at distant or hard to reach equipment sites. When a router, switch or security appliance becomes inaccessible and interrupts network services, WTI out-of-band solutions provide redundant, remote console port management and power switching/reboot control to regain access and restore services in mission critical applications.
Even when the network is down, WTI out-of-band console server solutions can provide secure connectivity over primary and secondary ethernet and cellular LTE connections, allowing remote access to console ports and power control functions.
In addition, WTI DevOps allows administrators to configure, deploy and orchestrate WTI out-of-band management solutions across your entire network for automated provisioning, monitoring and disaster recovery of critical infrastructure. Features such as RESTful API, Ansible Playbooks and Python Scripting are supported.
Check Point Software Technologies and WTI
WTI offers a comprehensive out-of-band management strategy for Check Point Security Gateways, allowing your NOC to deal with equipment outages and resulting interruptions of network communication without the need to dispatch support teams to remote branch offices and data centers.
During network outages, WTI’s console server products allow you to establish remote out-of-band connections to console ports on security gateways via secure, authenticated communication protocols. If a reboot is needed, WTI Switched PDU products can provide remote out-of-band access to power switching functions at distant equipment sites. WTI also offers a combination console server plus switched PDU unit for applications that require both out-of-band console access and power reboot control.
WTI out-of-band centralized management provides access and control for all of your network devices, allowing for console data from multiple Check Point devices spread over a global network to be monitored, logged and available to administrators, simplifying the challenge of managing a large number of remote devices while minimizing resources.
With multiple connectivity options, WTI console servers including 4G LTE and/or dual Gigabit Ethernet ports can provide secure access to advanced DNS functions when primary and/or secondary ISP connections are switched or disconnected. WTI’s dual ethernet console servers allow you to remotely configure primary and secondary DNS settings and set up IP tables to maximize availability of security gateways during network outages, ensuring seamless transfers between primary and secondary ISPs. The optional 4G LTE internal modem provides a secure additional alternate path for out-of-band connectivity using security protocols such as IPSec and OpenVPN.
About WTI
WTI designs and manufactures Secure Out-of-Band Management Solutions for local and globally deployed networks. WTI provides redundant OOB console access and power control to mission critical infrastructure … even when the network is down. WTI products can be purchased factory direct and through various channel partners worldwide. Since 1964, WTI has maintained local in-house manufacturing, engineering and technical support. Donating to Ao3 is like paying for Netflix; it's just paying for an entertainment service you use. Servers are fucking expensive, and Ao3 is a really big archive. Just throw five bucks at them once a year if you can, it's really not a big deal.
Also please do NOT donate to all the Palestine go-fund-me's floating around here, the majority of them are just blatant scams. I've had one of those blogs send me two completely different sob stories a few days apart, and also had two different blogs send me the exact same sob story, right down to the fucking emoji usage. If you want to help Palestinians, donate to the Red Cross, or Doctors Without Borders. Or any organized, professional relief group that is actively working in Palestine right now, because they can actually access that money easily and use it to buy large amounts of food and medical supplies at a steep discount. Donating to THEM will do a hell of a lot more than sending a random Palestinian civilian five american dollars over the internet.
Should I donate to AO3?
#anyways some of y'all really dont care about palestine in the slightest. you just like feeling morally superior#you are allowed to pay for things that you personally enjoy without feeling horrifically guilty for not giving that money to charity#if you dedicate every moment of your life to helping those less fortunate you'll just burn out#and then nobody gets helped at all#take a fucking break. read some fanfic. support a massive independent archive that protects its users from legal harassment#(which is a VERY REAL CONCERN we used to have. guys some famous authors used to dox people for writing fanfic of their stuff)#ao3 is handling your server space. your firewall. your software fixes. and your legal fees.#ffs its not like the extra money they get from donation drives is wasted. they ask for the bare minimum to survive#giving them more means they have the breathing room to improve. or to overcome a disaster

This is a story about software.
….
So the software I implement *looks* like it’s a singular application that works in a consistent, uniform manner across all its components and functionalities.
It’s easy to be fooled. It’s all going by the same name and calling the same data using the same set of IDs and you’d *think* that implies consistency.
But then you get to know it, over time, during an implementation project. And you realise that it’s not, actually, a singular program at all. It’s roughly 12 PHP applications in a trenchcoat made of JavaScript, and that’s just the front-facing stuff.
And while all those bits of software pretending to be a single program are all remarkably *similar*, they are also all inconsistent with each other in key manners (and I mean, management of keys is one of those ways), and if you don’t keep this in mind and account for it, your build is just not going to function.
It feels like some of these component programs were developed by different teams that all got the same brief but definitely didn’t talk to each other until it was too late -whereas others are most likely inconsistent to allow them to function at all (you can almost taste the developer tears).
None of these components are necessarily better than others (though some are better at interacting with each other than others) -and though not all of them are equally useful or functional on their own, full end user functionality depends on all of them working together.
It’s easier for end users to interact with software by imagining it is one thing and not a bunch of things interacting underneath some kind of facade. It’s an easier sell too.
But… if you’re trying to build a functioning system, you can’t treat it like that. You have got acknowledge and accommodate what’s underneath the front end.
….
Anyway, maybe this is not a story about software.
